Growing a beard and mustache usually gives a sense of pride and accomplishment to a man. But not all men, as there are factors genetics, medical conditions, testosterone levels, nationality, injury to the face and even reduced intake of certain vitamins and minerals that prevent them from doing so.
Setting aside genetics and nationalities, what most men lack when it comes to growing a mustache and a beard is actually patience. Like all good things in life, it takes of time and effort for your facial hair to become strong, thick and above all, appealing. It is not something that just happens to grow and look good, you need to maintain it.
Once you set your mind to growing a beard or a mustache, you need to know that there are more than a few different factors that influence the growth. First step you need to take is to make sure that your skin is clean. The hair follicles may and will over time become clogged with grime, dirt, dead skin cells or excess oil secreted by the skin, which makes growing new hair a challenge. Scrub your face on a daily basis and every time it gets dirty, to ensure that the hair follicles are clean and give yourself a proper chance to grow thick and healthy hair.
Besides cleaning, hair follicles on your face can be stimulated with massage, just like the ones on your scalp. Massage the face tissues for about 10 to 15 minutes, once or twice the day.
Now, once the hair starts growing, you may notice that it has patches where the hair doesn’t seem to grow. This is where patience comes in. Not all hair on your face grows at the same speed, and this fact is very important. As the hair grows longer, the slower-growing follicles get the chance to sprout new hair, when the sufficient amount of time passes, the patches will become covered, whether by new, slower growing hair or the long hair.
Once the hair grows for about a centimeter in length, you may begin to trim it. As mentioned before, some hair grow faster and some slower so in the beginning, your facial hair will look quite messy, so trimming will give shape to the beard and mustache and eliminate those stray strands of hair.
Have in mind that taking care of the outside of your body is hardly enough. You need proper nutrients for the body to function properly and thus, grow healthy hair more efficiently. Deficiency in vitamins has been known to cause hair loss, so try to incorporate at least the minimum required amount into your everyday diet.
Vitamin A is very important for the health of your hair, as it stimulates the sebaceous gland to produce sebum, which keeps the skin and hair follicles hydrated. It is found mostly in liver, eggs, carrots and dark leafy vegetables, such as broccoli. Vitamin B3 helps with circulation, which in turn may boost hair growth. You can find it in chicken, fish and wheat. Vitamin B5, or more commonly known as pantothenic acid helps the body reduce stress levels, and high levels of stress are a known cause of hair loss. Leafy greens, egg yolks, avocados and brewer’s yeast are rich in B5.
Folic acid, or vitamin B9 is needed for the hairs growth and repair, so try to eat more peas, nuts and whole-grain foods.
